Depression is one consequence of diabetes. Low sugar level in the blood affects the serotonin production of the brain which then leads to depression. Depression can also be worsened by the lack of moral support from friends and love ones. Proper medical information and education should not be limited to the diabetic patients alone. Close relatives and friends should also be well-informed about diabetes so as to help in the health maintenance of the patient. People who are suffering from diabetes may occasionally need the proper attention of people who are close to him or her. Giving attention to a diabetic is not limited to administering medications. Diabetic patients also need emotional support from love ones.
Although individuals with diabetes have higher survival than
cancer patients, their emotional needs are similar. People close to a diabetic patient may notice a trend of emotional ups and downs or
manic-depressive cycle. At one time, a diabetic patient may feel on top of the world with optimistic outlook. At another time, a diabetic patient may feel bitter and hopeless. Families and friends should not be irritated rather give the utmost care and attention to a love one suffering from diabetes. Diabetic patients should not be treated or isolated as if suffering from a contagious disease like
human immunodeficiency virus infection.
