Diabetes is a major concern nowadays, especially since if left untreated, it can cause massive complications to a person's health. For example, pregnant women who have been previously diagnosed with gestational diabetes run the risk of having type 2 diabetes, which may also affect the child they are carrying.
What is gestational diabetes?
Gestational diabetes is a condition wherein pregnant women have a hard time producing and using insulin. If untreated, this could result in the child being exposed to too much glucose, leading to an overly large baby upon delivery. The size of the child is also a cause for complications in gestation. Later on, the mother as well as the child may develop type 2 diabetes.
Treatment for gestational diabetes
Gestational diabetes is often tracked during the 6th month or 24th week of pregnancy. Gestational diabetes may be subdivided into two types, type A1 and type A2. Type A1 is muchlike type 2 diabetes, which can be controlled through various lifestlye changes. However, type A2 requires additional insulin treatment. Those who suffer from the condition are expected to adhere to a strict meal plan, preferably prepared by a dietitian. Regular physical activity is also prescribred, although it may be moderated to short walks.
Routine check-ups for blood pressure and blood sugar are also prescribed. Bear in mind that gestational diabetes can affect your health long after birth, even though the condition dissapears after delivery. This is why expectant mothers should be very careful with their health to ensure that of the child they are carrying.

Over the years, science has continually studied diabetes and how to successfully treat the condition. Symptoms as well as its various characteristics have been diagnosed, resulting in two basic types: type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes type 1 and type 2
Diabetes type 1 is also known as juevenile-onset diabetes or insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). This is the condition wherein the pancreas is no longer capable of creating insulin. Hence, it cannot be treated by changes in the diet and those who have it would need insulin injections to be able to regulate glucose. On the other hand, type 2 Diabetes can be controlled through lifestlye changes. The most common type of diabetes, it occurs when the body stops accepting the insulin discharged by the pancreas. The most common reason for type 2 diabetes is a high-sugar diet combined with lack of exercise.
Gestational diabetes
This type of diabetes occurs during pregnancy, wherein the mother loses the ability to use her own insulin due to the hormones released by the placenta. Although gestational diabetes goes away once the mother gives birth, it is still important to treat the condition for the sake of the child. This is because gestational diabetes often exposes the fetus to too much glucose, resulting in an overly fat child that runs the risk of diabetes type 2 when grown to adulthood.
Diabetes is a lifelong condition that can be controlled, especially with the recent developments in medicinal science nowadays. However, it can also be avoided by some, provided that they stick to a proper diet and enough phy sical activity.

Have you ever thought of the difference between a diabetic adult and a diabetic child? The difference between the two lies in their food. Yes, they both follow a certain diet, but there is a big difference. Most adult would not appreciate it because it's biased. But that's the price that they have to pay for having that damn disease.
Children with diabetes need to eat the same nutritious foods that other family members eat. They do not need a strict diet to maintain a definite sugar content. They can also eat food containing sugar moderately. Wow! These children can eat Hershey's chocolates and sweet and freshly baked cookies. They don't even need special diabetic food. It's the exact opposite of adult diabetic patients who have a strict meal time. Meals and snacks follow a scheduled time. There is a certain amount of food that they need to eat depending on their activities. Balance is also a very important factor.
There is a great discrepancy on the kinds of foods diabetic people eat. I would be disgusted about it if I was an adult with diabetes. However, they are just the same, both are suffering from the sickness they do not wish to have.

I have always emphasized the importance of self-discipline for diabetic person. If your family has a history of diabetes, then you should train yourself to stay from chocolates, cakes, meringue, and other sweet delicacies, or else be ready to face the consequence of your action. Actually, what we should be concerned about are the effects of this disease in other body parts. This disease might bring complication to our heart, ears, and others. Unfortunately, there are still people who cannot watch their diet. I met a diabetic girl in the hospital who just couldn't give a damn about her condition. Last night, I saw her buying some Hershey chocolates in the nearest supermarket. Aside from that, she also bought some ingredients in making chocolate moose. She also had three cans of Coca-Cola in her box. I thought if she wants to kill herself, she should have told me and I can happily slit her throat.
I just gave her a smile, but deep in my mind, I wanted to ask why are there people who are so dumb not to follow the advice of their doctors. Why do they have to eat those foods even if they're fully aware of the situation? Every time I see those kinds of people, my blood pressure always goes up. Oh, I think I need to take my medicine already.

Diabetes is a disease known to afflict millions of people all around the world. Its treatment can be quiet expensive Yet, this life-long disorder need not hinder those who have it from leading long, healthy lives. In the last two decades or so, diabetes has gone on to affect people living in all sides of the world economic spectrum. Famous personalities are not immune from this disorder.Yet, diabetes did not prevent them from pursuing their ambitions They even went on to prove that an illness or a handicap is not enough reason to stop living a productive life. I am amazed at those diabetics who, in spite of having this serious ailment, still look healthy and normal. These people practice a great deal of discipline when it comes to eating the suitable food. Diabetics, in general, can still stay healthy. The key to this is sound diabetes diet management.
This means that diabetics should look for sugar substitutes and available sugar free food. Before, it might be very hard to look for them, but now, there are a lot of diabetic sugar alternatives and glucose-free products that are available and popular in the market. There are so many of them that even these materials can be used in baking, which is perfect for those bread-loving diabetics.
Another advice for sound diabetic food management is being keen in the amount of food being eaten. Diabetics should be observant on what, when, and how much they eat because all these affect his or her blood glucose level. They must also be aware that by eating roughly the same amount of carbohydrate foods at about the same time each day, they are able to keep the blood glucose at a healthy level. Indeed, by maintaining a balanced food regimen and exercise, diabetics can still live a healthy and normal life.

It is true that what you eat reciprocates the sugar content in your blood. So it is a must to choose what food we will intake to control the sugar level of your blood.
As you can see, there is clearly no specific diabetes diet that diabetic peeps should follow. What's best to do is to consult a dietitian that can help you in redesigning your eating diet. A meal guide is necessary for diabetic individuals to assess and measure the intake of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and calories your food should contain in each meals and breaks. In regards to eating foods which contain sugar, doctors say that there is no problem in doing so, as long as the sugar intake is balanced and well distributed between meals.
Moreover, if you think or observed that your sugar level is way above normal or it is below normal, it is advisable to consult your doctor immediately so you would know how to respond. To some things up, it is best for diabetics to frequently maintain a healthy, balanced diet to avoid complications and unwanted instances that might further affect one's health condition.

Weight loss has long been associated with fitness and being healthy that the risks it poses as a symptom of diabetes are not readily recognized. A slow, intentional, and steady weight loss through changes in diet, nutritional intake, and level of physical activity is often associated with beneficial effects on the circulatory system, cholesterol levels, and general well-being. But an abrupt decrease in weight with no apparent effort or changes in lifestyle is and should be a cause of worry. It could be a symptom of diabetes.
If blood sugar is high, diabetics tend to urinate and relieve themselves a lot which might result in dehydration and ultimately weight loss. Another cause of weight loss is the break down of muscle fibers and tissue due to high sugar levels. Studies actually show that many diabetics are diagnosed while initially consulting their doctors for increasing weight loss.
According to studies, rapid weight loss may reduce insulin resistance which make the fat and muscle tissues more sensitive to the circulation of insulin in the system. As a result, the tissues become more resistant or intolerant of insulin. This is often the case of the second kind of diabetes wherein an insulin supplement is needed to aid the metabolization of glucose. Changes in lifestyle and healthy eating habits are necessary to accommodate insulin supplements. It is imperative that any suspicious or rapid changes in patients should be evaluated completely.

Raise your cups please!Let's toast for longer years of a healthy life. Whether it's black, decaf, espresso, or mocha frappe, coffee drinkers have better reasons to celebrate. The world's most loved beverage was proven to stave off diabetes. And that's not just an ordinary claim. This new health discovery was based on the research of the Nurse's Health Study.
Based on the research, women who drink up to six cups of coffee daily have lesser risk of having the said disease. A coffee bean contains antioxidants that help reduce the level of the insulin component called the C-peptide in the blood. High levels of C-peptide means that the body is unable to use insulin properly and is a major cause of diabetes. According to the said study, women who drink coffee have 13% to 14% lower amount of C-peptide than those who never drink coffee at all. Another exciting fact is that obese and overweight women have lower levels having a depreciation of about 18% to 20% of the hormone component.
Moreover, the study suggests that caffeine and other components found in coffee can work together or separately in eliminating the risk of acquiring type two diabetes. But there are also some that suggest to drink decaf rather than regular coffee since caffeine can also raise blood pressure and might trigger coronary heart disease.

My grandmother who is a diabetic is now having difficulty with her eyesight. At first, we thought it was just a result of old age. Then, when she had her check-up with the doctor, she was told that her poor eyesight was a result of her diabetes. She had been having a high blood glucose level, lately. Thus, this affected the retinas of her eyes.
There are blood vessels in our eyes, especially in our retinas. These blood vessels can be damaged very easily. Having very high blood glucose level and even high blood pressure can really affect the eyes' retinas. The small blood vessels are very fragile. Once you have constant high blood glucose level and high blood pressure, your retinas are more likely in danger to weaken and swell-up.
Some blood vessels can get pretty clogged-up, too. You may not feel the instant result of your retinas' weakening, but, it would surely result to very poor eyesight. You can even lose your vision if you're not careful. When this happens, you would not lose your vision in both of your eyes. Usually, it's always one eye then the other. It all depends on the impact of your high glucose level and high blood pressure. So, the best way to prevent this is to have an annual eye check-up from top-notch care specialists. You should also stick to a healthy diet and have a regular exercise to prevent high blood pressure.

You are sure that you do not have diabetes. But, what if your doctor told you that you have diabetes on your 28 weeks of pregnancy? Be aware! You have gestational diabetes. Be concerned because it endangers you and your baby!
Gestational diabetes is acquired by during pregnancy period usually with high blood sugar level or glucose. Four percent of pregnant women worldwide are affected each year and 135,000 are being affected in the United States each year. Direct cause of this disease has not been established, but researchers have some explanation to it. Insulin resistance during pregnancy is caused by the hormones from the placenta which helps the baby grow at the same time blocking the mother's insulin action. Without enough insulin, glucose builds up and will develop to hyperglycemia.
The pancreas produces too much insulin in the body, but it does not lower your blood levels. The thing is, it goes through the placenta giving your baby high blood levels that will develop into macrosomia. Babies with macrosomia develop health problems such as very low blood glucose, breathing problems, and higher risk of obesity. That are some pretty scary facts, don't you think?

My grandmother has a type 2 diabetes. Whenever we eat out, she would always order food from the menu that's the least tasty because there's no sugar in it. I feel bad for her, but, that's just the way it is. Who would have thought that she would develop diabetes when she lived a healthy life? Well, we only knew recently about her type 2 diabetes. She never thought that she was feeling symptoms of the disease already.
More often than not, people with type 2 diabetes are not aware that they already have the disease. This is because the symptoms are somewhat indirectly related to diabetes. With the type 2 diabetes, you are more likely to have very itchy skin and yeast infections. You'll also get constantly blurry eyesight. Your cuts, sores, and wounds heal very slowly. You thirst a lot and your mouth gets very dry. You also urinate often and you experience chronic leg pains. These symptoms are not to be ignored. If you feel this way, you should head straight to your doctor. If you want to fight diabetes, you better know when to eat right and have a regular doctor's appointment.

More than 20 million Americans are suffering from diabetes. About 10 percent have the Type 1 diabetes. Unfortunately, Type 1 diabetes can be acquired regardless of age. In fact, for every 600 children alive in America, one adolescent has or will be having this type of diabetes in the future.
Symptoms of the Type 1 form include excessive hunger, frequent feeling of thirstiness, frequent urination, sudden weight loss, blurred vision, tiredness, and irritability.
There is no cure yet for a Type 1 diabetic. However, with the help of today's advanced technology, the disabling problem of this disease has reduced. Unlike before, patients with Type 1 diabetes can manage the disease with proper education and positive outlook in life. The regular checking of blood sugar and taking of insulin help the patient to feel better and do his daily routines.
One of the causes of having diabetes is the lack of insulin that produces glucose in the cells. Insulin is the primary source of energy of our body. Another cause is a family history. If one of your parents has diabetes, you will probably have it too, or the generation next to you.

I have an aunt who is a diabetic. She exercises regularly to maintain her weight or to lose weight safely. So, what should you do if you're a diabetic and you still want to exercise? According to studies, exercise and workouts do not really affect a diabetic's health. Although, sometimes there are risks but they're not so dangerous and bad. If you want to start an exercise routine, make sure that you're also ingesting the proper amount of food. You should also be aware of your sugar intake.
Before planning or beginning your exercise routine, you have to check with your doctor first. You can't just start a strenuous workout activity without your doctor's consent. You should ask what the proper exercise for you. Before you begin your exercise, it's a must that you check your blood sugar level. That way, you won't faint in the middle of your exercise routine.
You should also check it after your workout. It's also important that you wear protective shoes and socks. This would prevent you from getting blisters. Before you start your exercise, you have to drink a generous amount of water. Fluid intake is very important before, during, and after an exercise. Lastly, bring some extra snacks so if ever your blood sugar level drops, you'll have something to energize you.

Diabetes is one of the known ancient diseases such as herpes simplex infection. However, unlike other diseases, diabetes is not contagious. It is like a cancer ailment that is genetically determined, although environmental factors such as diet contribute to its onset. The earliest known record of diabetes was in 1552 B.C. The disease was mentioned by a physician by the name of Hesy-Ra in a papyrus. He mentioned polyuria or frequent urination as symptom. However, the term diabetes was coined by the Greek physician Arateus in the first century A.D. The term diabetes is derived from a Greek word which means siphon.
Later on, in 164 A.D., the Greek physician, Galen of Pergamum, mistakenly attributed diabetes as an ailment of the kidneys. He deduced it from the fact that diabetic patient urinated frequently. It was only in the 19th century that the French scientist, Claude Bernard, studied the workings of the pancreas and the glycogen metabolism of the liver. It was in 1869 that Paul Langerhans, who was then a German medical student, published his dissertation that contained the findings that the pancreas has two systems of cells.

Diabetes is a set of symptoms which include polydipsia or frequent water drinking because of thirst, polyuria or frequent urination urination due to over drinking, polyphagia or overeating due to constant feeling of hunger, and polyasthenia or much weakness. These symptoms are present because of the inability of the body to absorb and utilize glucose. This is because of the defect on hormonal production of the pancreas. However, before the function of the pancreas was discovered, diabetes was already a known disease described during ancient times like herpes simplex infection and cancer ailments.
The malfunction of the pancreas organ is the main cause of diabetes. The pancreas is the center of insulin production. Insulin is the hormone needed by the cells to absorb and process glucose for metabolism. Thus a high concentration of glucose in the blood and urine is an indicator of diabetes. Pancreas is a Greek word which means sponge-like. To have an idea how the pancreas looks like, you simply have to stick out your tongue and look at it in front of a mirror. The size and shape of the tongue is the approximation of the pancreas.

Diabetes is one of the documented ancient diseases such as herpes simplex infection. It was in the year 70 A.D. that a Greek physician by the name of Areteu of Capadocia, Greece, described the disease diabetes. Diabetes is actually a Greek word which literally means siphon. He compared the disease to a siphon because to its nature to seemingly siphon all food and fluid intake of the patients out of the body, without actually benefiting the patient. He observed that diabetes was a combination of four symptoms, namely, polyphagia or over eating due to frequent hunger, polydipsia or over consumption of water due to frequent feeling of thirst, polyuria or excessive and frequent urination due to over consumption of water, and polyasthenia or extreme weakness in spite of food intake.
The Greek physician observed that even with too much intake of food and water, the diabetic patient still felt weak and usually suffered weight loss. He also noted that a diabetic patient will almost always succumb to coma before death. For about 1,500 years, since the clinical description of Areteu, medicine did not progress in the research regarding diabetes.
It was only in the year 1670 that a British physician by the name of Thomas Willis discovered that the urine of a diabetic patient tasted sweet. Five years later, in 1675, Doctor Matthew Dobson verified that the urine of a diabetic indeed contained sugar. Later on, in 1715, Doctor M. Chevreul confirmed that the sugar was glucose. Thus, the name was called diabetes mellitus. Mellitus is a Latin word which means honey or very sweet. Only in 1889 that two German scientists, Von Mering and Minkowski, discovered that the pancreas was responsible for producing a substance that can control the symptoms of diabetes.

Diabetes is sometimes perceived as the most common disease of the opulent class. However, diabetes does not recognize any social class, age, gender, or religion. Nonetheless, diabetes is more prevalent in highly developed countries like the United States. This prevalence can be directly correlated with the diet. Fast food diet is credited for the large incidence of obesity among the populace. Fast food diet is also blamed for some incidence of the dreaded cancer disease. The high fat and high salt contents of fast food diet are the main reasons for this. Fast food franchises profit at the expense of public health.
Diabetes usually occurs unexpectedly. It may strike a victim regardless of social status or age. However, the elderly commonly suffer from diabetes due to the malfunction of the pancreas. Diabetes is a defect in the secretion and utilization of the hormone insulin by the cells of the body. When insulin is insufficient, the cells of the body are unable to utilize glucose for energy. Hence, a glucose or sugar buildup in the blood occurs. High sugar contents in the blood may lead to several complications such as vision impairment and gangrene of the lower extremities.
There are two main types of diabetes. Type1 diabetes is insulin-dependent which usually happens at an early age, insulin injection is required. The pancreas is either damaged or not producing enough insulin. Type2 diabetes is latter onset, which is due the reduced ability if the body cell to utilize insulin.

The human body is a very efficient self-preserving machine. The body is capable of healing itself. The body is also capable of receiving and processing nourishment. Complex food molecules are broken down into simpler forms. Carbohydrates from cereals, rice or bread are broken down into simple sugar or glucose. Protein chains from fish meat fillet and eggs are reduced to amino acids. Vitamins and minerals are extracted from fruits and vegetables to aid metabolism.
All of these processes are carried out by the digestive system. Digestion begins in the mouth. The teeth grind the food and saliva help dissolve the food. The food is then carried to the stomach by the peristaltic movement of the esophagus. In the stomach food are mixed with digestive acids and enzymes. The food with enzyme mixture is appropriately called bolus. The bolus then travel to the intestines. Food nutrients are absorbed in the blood stream in the capillaries of the small intestine.
However, food nutrients cannot be properly utilized by the body cells without hormones. One particular hormone necessary for sugar absorption and energy conversion is insulin. This hormone is responsible for the breakdown of glucose in the glycolysis process of metabolism.
Insulin is produced by the islets of langerhans of the pancreas. If the pancreas is damage or is not producing enough insulin, the result is diabetes mellitus. Diabetes is the state wherein there is too much sugar in the blood. The high sugar level may lead to tissue and organ damage. Some complications of diabetes are gangrene, glaucoma and kidney failure.

Don’t let that ground sway beneath your feet. Traveling diabetics need not let their blood sugar get in the way of pleasant journeys. After all, no one wants to be tethered to the safe comforts of their home forever.
First, consult with your doctor on how to schedule insulin intake throughout your trip. Insulin has good shelf life so don’t worry about refrigeration, although be on guard for extremely high temperatures. Pack lots of crackers, juices, and fruits so you always have something to pop in case blood sugar dips low. If taking the plane, give your airline at least 24 hour’s notice so they can prepare special food for you. Finally, if at the end of your trip lies a banquet waiting (the proverbial pot of gold?), don’t give in to temptation that easily; stick to your regular diet. You’d be thankful you did.

Obesity has always been associated with diabetes and heart failures. This new study though shows the relation of obesity, diabetes and heart failure more clearly.
It has been found out that those that have higher insulin resistance are more prone to heart problems. Obese people that have a greater amount of fat cells in their bodies are susceptible to diabetes. The fat cells in their bodies are resisting the insulin, thus making them vulnerable to diabetes.
The medical community has been trying to find ways of preventing this from happening. Diets for obese people and proper health care for those with heart problems are the obvious prevention and/or cure for having heart failure due to lack of insulin in the body.
On October 17, 2005 the American Diabetes Association has announced that there is an ongoing research on a serious eye disease called "proliferative diabetic retinopathy", an abnormal blood vessel growth resulting in blindness.
Researchers have discovered through controlled tests on 144 PDR-afflicted diabetics that the growth of red cell erythropoietin is one of the leading causes of this disease. It was followed by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) but the former has been found to have a stronger effect. The presence of erythropoietin was found to be highly concentrated on those with PDR than non-diabetics, and that it was produced primarily in the eye.
Now that the cause has been determined, the ADA researchers are now looking to find a way to block the activity of erythropoietin as a cure for the disease.

Through the years, Diabetes Foundations have devoted their effort and time in providing information about the dreaded disease. As one of the killers of man, diabetes continues to plague people's lives. To limit these occurrences, several people have dedicated their resources to be able to reach out and help diabetes patients. Every year, these foundations conduct fund raising drives to sustain their financial needs and provide diabetes patients with what they need. Another method that foundations utilize is asking for donations from well off people. Finally, the most important achievement that foundations have ventured is to practice some entrepreneurship. Basically, foundations have realized that value of their assets once they are invested. Foundations enter into car donations, motorcycle donations, and other forms of income generating activities. The proceeds may not be enough, but a little help to diabetic patients is all that matters.

People who are suffering from the symptoms of diabetes find it irritating and most unfortunate when they suddenly find that their blood sugar levels are dropping. This is dangerous for those people because either hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia might be experienced if the blood sugar level if not monitored.
This is very dangerous especially for children who do not keep track of their sugar levels. There is now a product called GlucoWatch G2 that measures one's blood sugar by collecting glucose through the skin. This shows one's glucose level. The GlucoWatch G2 Biographer is comprised of these two components: the Biographer and the sensor. The latter can measure glucose constantly on a 13-hour period.
This product is easy to use and is ideal for diabetics because it shows the fluctuation of the body's sugar level. One needs to have a prescription from his doctor to be able to purchase this.
