If you have symptoms of diabetes or your family has a history with the condition, then it is vital that you check your blood sugar for possibe signs. If you are just suspecting yourself of having diabetes, then it is best to consult a doctor. However, if you already have one, then checking your blood sugar at timely intervals is vital. Hence, you might want to get a diabetes test kit for this.
What is a diabetes test kit?
The kit is designed to measure the level of glucose in the body. You don't need a prescription to buy one although the prices may vary depending on the brand. Glucose may be measured through a urine or blood test, often placed on a strip of paper and tested.
Components of a diabetes test kit
A diabetes test kit may differ depedning on the brand. However, most usually work by putting either a blood or urine sample on a paper strip and a tester. A common kit would contain the battery operated tester, the paper strips as well as the sharp lancets that will be used to prick your finger. Like most products, it comes with an easy to read user's manual.
Owning a diabetes test kit is a must for those who have diabetes. This is because constant monitoring is needed to maintain a person's glucose within healthy levels. Home test kits are simple to use, eliminating the need to constantly show up in the doctor's office for check up.

Before diabetes, there were only healthy episodes of nighttime sleep. I could snooze right on the sofa in front of the tube when the shows get a little boring, and wake up finding myself still dressed the way I was yesterday. It's not like this anymore. Before bedtime, there's always the necessary glucose test before sleep, and in the wee hours of the morning, often at 3 am. Also, there's the constant watch on the carbs that I eat at night. This means special pasta dishes that are made specifically for diabetics like me.

If I don't do this, I'd be experiencing the deadly Somogyi effect again. I'd been to the Diabetic Information Center and learned a lot about diabetic terms I wasn't familiar before. The DIC is a great place to be educated so you can fend for yourself when the doctor couldn't come to your rescue. I've learned the hard way that if I don't watch out for my glucose level, I'm going to rebound. Sometimes it happens because of what I ate, or sometimes it just happens with some medicines I take.
Thursday, April 26. 2007
The Somogyi effect, according to the DIC, can spring from an instance of low level of blood sugar or what they call hypoglycemia. All humans metabolize sugars and release hormones in the body when the glucose supply is depleted. The trouble with diabetics is that the body produces epinephrine and glucagon - hormones that cause imbalance in the glucose level of the patients. If I don't check my BSL anytime during the dawn, I might vomit and be so thirsty when I wake up because of hyperglycemia, something that's very dangerous to me.

When I was young, my parents always told me that I should not sweet foods like chocolates and cakes. It's because we have a history of diabetes. My maternal grandmother had diabetes and so with my Uncle. Having a family history of diabetes alarms me. Why? Because those foods that they mentioned are actually my favorites. From that day on, I keep telling to myself that I would never eat too much sweets. I have to be a disciplined person to be able to do that. Although I love those foods, it's clear on my mind that I love my life more.
After many years, I have kept that promise. I still eat chocolates and other sweets but in minimal. I also makes sure that I am always healthy and in good shape. I also did some research about the disease and did some preventive measures to avoid it. Aside from that, I always exercise and work out in the gym. Discipline plays a very important role in my life since I have known our family history. And I can honestly say that discipline has also helped me in other aspects of my life. It made me a better person that what I expected.

Diabetes, just like many chronic diseases, have solid scientific explanations for its occurrence. However, several mythical notions about diabetes have been created. Many of these myths date back to olden times. Fortunately, most, if not all, of these myths are not based on fact and are usually borne out of very imaginative minds.
Perhaps, the most common myth about diabetes is that it was caused by eating too much sugar or sweets. While sugar and sweets do play a part in raising one's blood glucose, they do not cause diabetes. Often, the disorder is more likely due to any number of significant factors like family history, improper nutrition, or the absence of a regular physical activity like a daily exercise.
Another common belief about diabetes is that only medication can control it. Again, this is not based on fact because medications like insulin injection is just part of the cure for diabetes. Along with medication is the need for a healthy lifestyle including a well-balanced diet and a regular exercise program.
Diabetes has often been shrouded in mystery. Lack of knowledge and information is usually the cause of this. However, with proper education, people can gain an understanding that diabetes myths are simply what they are, myths which were created by the minds of imaginative writers.

In US today, the number of diabetes cases are alarmingly increasing. A recent study in lifestyle and daily dietary factors on the type 2 diabetes progressive state, showed that such condition can be avoided by a simple adaptation of a healthy lifestyle.
The said study was conducted upon 95,000 nurses for more than 10 years. At the beginning of the study, all female subjects did not have diabetes, cancer, and any other cardiovascular diseases. Their lifestyle and diet information were periodically updated as the study's basis. At the course of the study, there were more than 3,000 new conditions of type 2 diabetes and obesity or overweight were found as the most important provision of diabetes among the subjects. Moreover, those who do not condone to proper nutritional diet, do not exercise, and those who smoked are the ones said to be highly at risk of acquiring diabetes.
However, the said study also noted that diabetes incidence is noticeably low in individuals with an index body mass of 25; had a consistent diet of polyunsaturated fat, cereal fiber, as well as low in glycemic acid and trans fat; non-smokers; involving in heavy to moderate physical activities; and basically those who consume half a glass or bottle of alcoholic beverage each day.

The International Diabetes Foundation is alarmed at the increasing rate of amputation quickly conducted by physicians when 85 percent of which may be preventable. Non-traumatic amputations are caused by arterial blockages related to diabetes, smoking, obesity, and vascular system complications. Amputations, aside from being disfiguring and life-threatening, are found to be more dangerous and more expensive than revascularization, which is the reestablishment of blood supply. Sixty percent of non-traumatic lower extremity amputations (LEAs) in the US yearly are diabetes related.
In advanced stages of peripheral vascular disease (PVD) which is common in diabetics, plaque blocks arteries, resulting in rest pain, development of foot ulcers, and onset of limb loss. In this era of medical advancement, amputations have become less necessary, but physicians often jump too quickly to amputation rather than exploring medical advances that can prevent limb loss. One is the Cool Laser Revascularization for Peripheral Artery Therapy, or "CLiRpath," which uses a "cool" excimer laser and catheter system developed by Spectranetics Corp. (NASDAQ: SPNC), that vaporizes arterial blockages and restores blood flow. The surgery also promotes wound healing that often enables patients to leave the hospital the next day. CLiRpath is now available in more than 300 hospitals across the US.

I strongly believe that the youth are the hopes of tomorrow. That is why I really feel for young kids who are diabetics at a tender age. Most likely, these children do know well how to combat the disease and keep physically fit bodies. This is possible by maintaining a healthy diet combined with proper exercise.
Now, diabetic kids need not worry a lot about healthy diets for afflicted people like them. Patti B. Geil's "Cooking Up Fun For Kids With Diabetes," provides nutritional diets for diabetic kids. Just like the deadly cancer, certain diets are especially formulated for diabetes. I personally recommended this book to a friend of mine who has a son with diabetes.
My friend told me that this book did not only present him healthy or nutritional diet for his son, but enabled him to give moral support for his son. He was also able to convince his son to believe in the essential of foods that are healthy in order to combat the disease. It does not only benefit the kids, but the parents as well especially when it comes to proper nutrition for good health. For parents or guardians with diabetic children, this book will be of great help.

In America, at least one million Americans develop diabetes every year. America has also become the fattest country. The fast food industry has taken over and replaced the regular healthy meals of Americans. Most Americans no longer make their own home-cooked meals. They prefer to eat out or to cook instant food. Because of the lack of nutritional benefits of this type of junk foods, most Americans have developed the diabetes disease.
So now, the pre-diabetes education program is at large. It is a program which educates and involves the people to do something about their lifestyles. You see, diabetes can be prevented and it can be stopped if the people would just have the proper knowledge on what can cause diabetes. This program particularly tackles the type 2 diabetes. The pre-diabetes program encourages all the people, especially those who are over-weight, to lose a considerable amount of weight for them to be fit.
A 30-minute daily exercise is part of this program. Of course, the right meals are also a part of this practical program. So, if you need help on your health, you could at least try joining the pre-diabetes program.

Maltitol is the best advisable sweetener to use for meals that are intended for a diabetes patient's consumption. Maltitol is a member of polyols or sugar alcohols. It is similar to sucrose and is almost as sweet as your regular sugar. It is proven to reduce the risk of cancer.
It is slowly absorbed by the body that is why it is ideal for people with diabetes as it does not rush the production of insulin in the body. Insulin response is moderated that is why the diabetes patient will not suffer from sugar or insulin-related shocks that might harm his or her health.
As always, we must consult the doctor or a dietician in using Maltitol in meal planning.
Maltitol is also very popular among body-conscious individuals as it has less calories than the usual sugar. Low calorie diets almost always include Maltitol in the food preparation. Maltitol also does not cause tooth decay that is why it is also ideal for toddlers who have sweet tooth and for parents who want to keep their children's teeth healthy.
Maltitol is god's gift to diabetes patients. With this artficial sweetener, diabetics can experience the sweetness of life too.

Depression is one consequence of diabetes. Low sugar level in the blood affects the serotonin production of the brain which then leads to depression. Depression can also be worsened by the lack of moral support from friends and love ones. Proper medical information and education should not be limited to the diabetic patients alone. Close relatives and friends should also be well-informed about diabetes so as to help in the health maintenance of the patient. People who are suffering from diabetes may occasionally need the proper attention of people who are close to him or her. Giving attention to a diabetic is not limited to administering medications. Diabetic patients also need emotional support from love ones.
Although individuals with diabetes have higher survival than cancer patients, their emotional needs are similar. People close to a diabetic patient may notice a trend of emotional ups and downs or manic-depressive cycle. At one time, a diabetic patient may feel on top of the world with optimistic outlook. At another time, a diabetic patient may feel bitter and hopeless. Families and friends should not be irritated rather give the utmost care and attention to a love one suffering from diabetes. Diabetic patients should not be treated or isolated as if suffering from a contagious disease like human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Diabetes is an illness that cannot be passed through a person to another unless you are a direct relative of a patient. Unlike colds, HIV or AIDs, diabetes is non-viral. Even if you eat on the same plate using the same utensils with a person inflicted with diabetes, you cannot and will not get diabetes, too.
There is no exact said cause of diabetes. It is an illness that is already centuries old. Researchers, scientists, and doctors have theorized that diabetes is a genetic illness. It can be passed on through genes. As it is hereditary, it is expected that if you have a parent or grandparent who is diabetic, chances are you can become one, too. If you know any direct relative that has diabetes, then you have to make sure you prevent it from happening to you by eating less fatty foods and less or sugar-free meals.
Exercise will definitely help too. It has been found out that obese people can also have diabetes even when they don't inherit the illness. Visit the gym if you can or at least climb the stairs to your fourth-floor office.
Live healthy and you won't have any problem about getting this no-confectionary-allowed sickness.

People suffering from diabetes can still live normal lives. Diabetes is not a totally debilitating disease that can cause disabilities. Unlike the dreaded cancer disease, diabetes is controllable. Diabetes is also a non-contagious disease like HIV infection. Diabetes is a disease cause by hormonal imbalance in the body.
The pancreas is the particular organ involved in diabetes. The islet of langerhans in the pancreas is the one that produces the hormone known as insulin. When the islet of langerhans is defective or is unable to produce enough insulin, the cells of the body become incapable of absorbing glucose for their metabolism. This vital role of insulin in the metabolic process was discovered was discovered in 1922 when Dr. Frederick Banting and associates isolated insulin and applied it in the treatment of diabetes.
Aside from the regular injection of insulin, proper exercise and nutrition are also equally important in maintaining the normal lifestyle routine of a diabetic person. Avoiding high cholesterol and high sugar diet is advisable for a diabetic. Depression or emotional downs of a diabetic can be avoided by refraining from stressful activities. The treatment of diabetes should be holistic in approach. Both physical and psychological health should be maintained.

With the advent of television, it became apparent that the entertaining images and tales from the glowing box have potential for addiction. And whereas before, our parents only told us to sit far from the screen or we’ll ruin our eyes, now it’s different. The term couch potato was thus coined: 24/7 TV-hooked person, chomping on potato chips and junk food, fattening all over the place.
Note that, by person, we include children. Yes, your children.
To make matters worse, diabetes is likely to set in them. Excessive TV watching exposes children to ads of junk food, which, surprise!, they’re likely to snack on while watching. Besides, it robs them of time in which they could have played outdoors with friends instead. Junk food + lack of physical activity = kids likely to grow up obese and with diabetes.
So encourage your child to go easy on the boob tube. There’s the real and exciting world outside waiting for them.

Gum Disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. And when you're a Diabetic, the risk of developing this is significantly increased. Studies have shown that those who do not have enough control over their blood sugar develop gum disease easier and more frequently than those who did.
As Diabetes slows down the body's immune system, the gums become more prone to infection and disease. And the high glucose content of a Diabetic doesn't help much either.
If your gums bleed easily during tooth brushing, have frequent bad breath or have loose teeth consult a dentist immediately for a proper diagnosis. That is unless you like to smile a toothless grin.

Although the exact cause of Type 1 Diabetes (known as Juvenile Diabetes or Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus) is not known, it is believed that it is caused by an environmental factor such as a virus or an allergen, which causes the immune system of the body (particularly in babies or very young children) to attack the beta cells that produce insulin.
The effects of this condition results in the symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes, such as fatigue, frequent urination, weight loss, nausea, sweet smelling breath and thirst.
There is also evidence of a genetic predisposition towards Type 1 Diabetes, and if your family has a history of it, there is a possibility that you or your children might develop it eventually.

Being diagnosed with Diabetes is sure to entail a lot of reactions, not all of them good. Some will surely be distressed, while some may accept it as inevitable, as it may be an inherited trait.
But some will deny that diagnosis, insisting that they are feeling fine and don't need to be seen by a doctor or health physician. While it is true that Diabetes is slow to develop and the symptoms might not appear for some time, eventually a person diagnosed with it will have to come face to face with the treatment required by the disease.
Denial in Diabetes can also be very dangerous, as those who deny having the condition continue doing what led them to develop Diabetes in the first place, and so aggravate the condition, leading to high blood sugar and other complications.

Diabetes pills come in many forms and functions, all of which affect the body's glucose levels in some way. Some affect the pancreas; others affect the rate of glucose absorption and so on. Pills are only used by people with Type 2 Diabetes and they are by no means a permanent way to deal with Type 2 Diabetes. Sooner or later, those with Type 2 Diabetes will have to take insulin as well.
Diabetes pills are a good and painless way to deal with Type 2 Diabetes. Doctors might require a sufferer to take pills in combination or change your dosage weekly, but this is done in order to find out which type of pill therapy is best for the person with Diabetes.

When a person's blood glucose levels are higher than what they normally would be but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes, that person is diagnosed as having pre-Diabetes.
Pre-Diabetes can be thought of as a precursor to the onset of Type 2 Diabetes. It is believed that those with pre-Diabetes will develop full-blown Type 2 Diabetes within 10 years. Those with pre-Diabetes also run the risk of developing heart disease.
But there is one good thing about being diagnosed with pre-Diabetes, and it's the chance to help prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 Diabetes with proper exercise and diet management.

As we all know, couch potatoes are a fairly common kind of weed we have growing in our homes. These are nefarious parasites that feed on our electricity, our food and our health. Couch potatoes often lead into Diabetes as well. They are generally high in fat and low in cardio.
To get rid of couch potatoes, you must first remove their primary food source: The glow of the Television. Unplugging it or setting it on a timer will make part of the problem disappear, but the couch potato may easily become a bed potato or easy chair potato instead. It is best to combine a treatment of light to moderate physical activity with a little out door fun in addition to cutting off their food supply.
Hopefully this will eliminate your couch potato problem and make them grow into more active and healthy sprouts.

Diabetes is a debilitating and life-changing disease. That is why it is so important to prevent its onset even at an early age, to prevent Type-2 Diabetes, which manifests in adults. Obesity is the number-one cause of Diabetes, and obese children grow up to become obese adults. There are even cases where Type-2 Diabetes was diagnosed in obese children.
It's important to prevent Diabetes from happening and keeping a healthy lifestyle will help prevent its onset. Even more so if your child is obese. While changing your lifestyle to include better meals, more physical activity and weight maintenance may be daunting, isn't it worth it to avoid Diabetes later on, for your children's sake?
