I have a friend who weighs around two hundred pounds and above. Even though, she doesn't like to eat sweets and other pastries involving sugar, she has diabetes. We were all shocked by this news because we didn't see this coming. In fact, my friend has never in her life imagined that she will get this illness. When I narrated this story to my cousin who is a doctor, she told me that being overweight can increase the risk of having this disease. So as early as now, you can determine if you'll develop diabetes in the near future by looking at the weighing scale.

Dr. K.M. Venkat Narayan, the chief epidemiologist in the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discovered in their studies that three out of four eighteen-year-old men will develop diabetes, while only thirty-five percent of eighteen-year-old women will develop diabetes in their lifetime. On the other hand, people with normal weight are also likely to develop this risk although the percentage is much lower for them. When I read about this stuff, I've realized that whether I'm too fat or just average, I'm still prone to developing type two diabetes.

I read an article in the internet about the connection of weight or BMI to the risk of diabetes. I printed the article using my laser jet 1600 printer so that my friends can read it. Based from the article, there's no clear explanation as to how being overweight can increase your chances of developing diabetes. The assumption is that fats can hinder the production of insulin. Insulin is responsible for converting sugar to energy. When I read the article, I was scared because I'm a little overweight. Whether the study is proven or not, the best way to prevent diabetes is to avoid eating super sweet pastries.

I'm a coffee junkie. My mother often tells me to stop drinking coffee because it's bad for my health. She keeps blabbing that it can increase my blood pressure and can make me look old because of caffeine. I refuse to believe her. Drinking coffee is still routine for me, especially when I found out recently that coffee can reduce the risk of diabetes in women. I've read this in the Internet. I even printed out a copy for my mother, using our new Hewlett Packard printer. After reading this, she drinks more than four cups a day of coffee.
Wednesday, May 9. 2007
Researcher Mark A. Pereira and his team discovered that women who drink more than six cups of coffee each day are more likely to develop a type two diabetes. Type Two diabetes, as we all know, occurs in middle age. But in the researches made by Pereira and company, it is found out that antioxidant is the anti-reducing element in coffee that prevents type two diabetes and not caffeine. Accordingly, it's better to drink decaf as it reduces the chances of getting type two diabetes. In the statistics, twenty-percent diabetes reduction can only be reduced when you drink coffee. On the other hand, thirty-three percent can be reduced if it's decaf. Incidentally., antioxidants protect the beta cells of pancreas from damages.

Rob van Dam, a researcher in Pereira's team had discovered in 2003 that the chlorogenic acid in coffee is good for the body. He observes that chlorogenic acid can lower the absorption sugar by the cells. In this way, the risk of getting diabetes will be greatly reduced. Although, Van Dam admits that this area should be further explore by experimenting on humans to understand fully the benefits of drinking coffee. With studies about the pros of drinking coffee in one's health, people are advised to drink and coffee not as a wake-up drink but for their own health as well.

Type 1 diabetics' bodies do not automatically control the glucose level in the blood. So, it is a must for them to watch their daily eating diet and insulin intake. Now that a proper maintenance of a healthy eating diet and a regular insulin intake can help regulate a controlled glucose level in the blood, doctors also advise diabetic individuals to refrain from involving in too much physical activities. Medical specialists once debated over the issue of whether to allow exercise on diabetic patents since it is said that too much physical activities may fatally decrease sugar content in the blood.
However, a latest study claims that daily exercise can actually help diabetic children in controlling their sugar level in the blood and such activity does not really direct them into any risk. The said study also explains that obese girls may even lose weight with a regular exercise since being overweight is considered a dangerous symptom of diabetes.
Moreover, the pediatrician who conducted the study said that though they are also expecting same results to adults who are diagnosed of type 1 diabetes, there are still circulatory issues, etc. that may be considered harmful when daily exercise is adapted. It is still advisable for adult diabetics to consult a doctor beforehand, to properly incorporate activities such as daily exercise in their lives.

More and more studies regarding the fertility and sexual drive of diabetic people are currently in process. The results from these studies will surely benefit medical experts in pursuit of diabetes advancements. For instance, a study in the University of Catania, Italy reveals that diabetic women, who also have problems in their various sexual activities may find Viagra as an appropriate means in order for them to improve their sexual capabilities, as well as attain enjoyment, excitement, orgasm, and decreased pain during sexual intercourse.
Based on series of clinical findings, women who are diagnosed to be diabetic experience sexual deficiencies, primarily because of discomfort, vaginal dryness, and other sex related factors. By taking Viagra pills, diabetic women will experience psychological effects that will benefit their sexual capabilities. In the particular study, more than 30 women with type 1 diabetes and also have dysfunctional sexual drive were used as subjects. All women were assigned to undergo a Viagra treatment that lasted for eight weeks. The subjects of the said research were then told to take the said medication an hour before their sexual intercourse.
After the treatment, final results showed that Viagra has increasingly improved the sex potencies of women who are diabetic.

Based on a new national health study, diabetes is hitting up to 275 new victims each day throughout Australia. This latest finding provided the government the first definitive, clear picture of the rising tide of diabetes, obesity, hypertension ( increased blood pressure) and chronic kidney disease in the country. The result of the study will be serve a significant role in establishing priorities and calculating future budgetary needs to address the alarming problem.
The statistics revealed that in Australia each year: approximately 100,000 adults develop diabetes (275 people daily), more than 200,000 people progress from being overweight to being obese (nearly 600 people daily), 400,000 adults develop hypertension, and 270,000 adults develop chronic kidney disease. The figures sent a "Red Alert" to ordinary Australians and to those charged with responsibility for public health which is a compelling proof that Australia's diabetes epidemic is in full flight. Health experts say that the diabetes epidemic is being driven by lifestyle factors, particularly the dramatic increase in obesity, poor diet and physical inactivity. This is already costing taxpayers over $3 billion annually and the figure will increase exponentially over time. The Australian government and public health officials are already drafting a contingency plan for the diabetes epidemic.

I am not asking you which of the two fatal diseases you would rather have. Of course, I am quite sure that you are not going to choose any, if given the chance. However, you all must know that there is in fact a relation between Hepatitis and Diabetes.
A certain report published in Diabetes Care May issue says that at least 40 in age and who are suffering from hepatitis C virus are more prone to develop diabetes type 2. In fact, these people's risks are increased three times as compared to those who are free from hepatitis C virus. Dr. Rafael Simo says that HCV is considered as diabetogenic agent. This means that insulin resistance is increased by the said virus. Therefore, development of diabetes type 2 is greatly increased when a person has Hepatitis C virus in his system. The said information was reported by Reuters Health.
Furthermore, Dr. Simo adds that he, together with his colleagues, found that HCV antibodies was higher in presence in patients with diabetes type 2. There is a great difference when compared to patients who are suffering from diabetes type 1. Incidentally, a study that was gathered from Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey showed that a relation connecting diabetes type 1 to HCV cannot be found. Thus, everyone is advised to take care of his body to ensure healthy living.

A recent study conducted by a team of researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis showed that an antidepressant medication may reduce the risk of recurrent depression. It can also increase the length of time between depressive episodes in patients with diabetes. It was earlier discovered that glucose levels improve as diabetics experience depression. Since depression is understood to be a chronic and recurring disease, prolonged depression will have drastic effects to blood sugar of diabetics.
Doctor Patrick Lustman, principal investigator and professor of psychiatry, didn't know whether the drug could prevent the recurrence of depression among diabetics. It's also unsure what would happen to glucose levels in the months following successful depression therapy. So Lustman teamed up with investigators at the University of Arizona, Tucson, and at the University of Washington, Seattle and studied a total of 152 patients with diabetes at the three sites. The study participants included patients with type 2 diabetes and patients with juvenile, or type 1, diabetes. They averaged just over 50 years of age, and all had recovered from an episode of depression following treatment with sertraline (ZoloftA).
At one year, it revealed that blood glucose levels remained lower, as long as the patient's depression remained under control. Lustman noted the result as the key to preventing the complications of diabetes, such as eye disease, neuropathy and kidney disease.

Scientists are currently developing a continuous glucose monitoring system and an artificial pancreas. This is seen as the next major scientific advancement in diabetes treatment and, eventually, a cure. This is in line with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) campaign to raise awareness of the importance of diabetes research. The group has been funding research for over 30 years now to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.
A closed-loop artificial pancreas will be a mechanical system that will integrate real-time glucose sensors, a computer controller, and an insulin delivery system. This closed-loop artificial pancreas system will enable a diabetic to maintain normal glucose levels by providing precise doses of insulin as needed throughout the day, just as the pancreas does in people without the disease. An artificial pancreas will help people with type 1 diabetics to delay or even prevent long term complications of the disease which can include kidney disease, blindness, amputation and early death. The development of a closed-loop artificial pancreas is a major priority for the JDRF. They launched a project earlier this year to help expedite the availability of such technology for people with diabetes as recommended treatment.

One of the primary causes of fatality in the world is diabetes. In fact, about 16 million Americans are aware that they have diabetes. However, there are 5 million more who are suffering from this disease, and they are unaware that they have this illness. Diabetes brings some complications to the patient; like blindness, heart and kidney diseases. Hence, there are numerous diabetes support groups around the world to help people with diabetes to have a normal lifestyle as possible.
One of the diabetes support groups that provides help to diabetic people is the Long Beach Medical Center. They offer education for both patients and their families. They invite reliable speakers to assist them in their education programs. Different health topics are discussed in their programs to help the patient live a healthy and active lifestyle. You can always count on the Long Beach Medical Center's help because the organization is composed of skilled, professional, and experienced personnel who handle the services being offered. The good deeds of LBMC is remarkable, and we can also give our shares by providing supports for diabetes support groups.

A great deal of people still adheres to natural ways or methods in order to maintain sound health. The same is true and applicable in managing and treating diabetes. This is possible only when such natural cure is properly blended with a healthy diet and proper exercise.
Just like the incurable cancer, diabetes can be reduced and can be treated. Goldstein, an owner of a nutrition shop, spent years hunting for the perfect natural combinations to combat this disease. She found out that the combination of gymnema sylvester, chromium, alpha lipoic acid, cinnamon extract, vanadyl sulfate, and multivitamin that is high-potency can help reduce the level and amount of glucose or sugar. The right fusion of nutrients, minerals, and vitamins can help fight and reduce the risk of diabetes.
Solid and crucial research has shown that such natural cure for this disease can really help diabetic people to normalize the level and amount of glucose. In this manner, they can live normal lives and need not resort to expensive medical treatments. But, great doses of Vitamins A and B6 can be considered toxic, so proper concern is stressed. This supplement which should be taken regularly is herbal in nature.

Managing diabetes type 2 entails undertaking several changes in your lifestyle. The steps that should be taken are simple and easy to follow. You have to eat the right food, take control of weight, quit smoking, and maintain physical health.
In addition, you must have the full control of your sugar intake for this will help minimize the occurrence of related complications such the incurable cancer. It is not very hard to have your sugar tested. If you possess this type of diabetes, the body cannot properly use glucose which is formed with the breaking down of food which in turn will be used as energy. The main key which will unlock the cells in order that glucose can access and boost cells is insulin.
In this case, the level of sugar is normalized. With diabetes type 2, the level of sugar cannot be normalized. This is so because the body does not produce sufficient insulin or does not utilize its insulin properly. This process is called resistance to insulin. The sad thing is, such predicaments can further lead to complication, but basic healthy practices and medications can be of great help to reduce or minimize the development of diabetes and other related diseases.

I have heard of the stomach condition, "gastroparesis", because my diabetic grandmother's doctor has warned us of this common diabetes condition. Gastroparesis is the condition wherein the stomach would take a much longer time to get rid of all its contents. Thus, this would cause the diabetic chronic vomiting, nauseating feelings, heartburns, imbalanced blood sugar level, and the reflux of acid.
In the highly advanced hospitals such as the one in Europe, the doctors have successfully made their breakthrough in gastroparesis. There were two people from Ireland, who were the first to be treated of the gastroparesis. They had a very smooth recovery. The vomiting and the nauseating feelings have been highly reduced after they have undergone a "gastric stimulator implants" surgery.
A large percentage of the diabetic population is experiencing the gastroparesis condition. Many Americans are also experiencing this diabetes sickness. They are also hoping for the gastric stimulator implants to be done in the American hospitals. That way, their uncomfortable gastroparesis condition would not anymore add up to their diabetes problems. It is not at all easy to treat this condition. Not all diabetics may undergo this surgery. It is a new thing for some European doctors. It is also a very new thing for the American doctors who have not yet even performed the operation.

I love to sleep a lot. I do not know why, but I do. Sometimes, I would sleep for 12 hours straight, most especially, on a fine weather. After that, I would still sleep some more. But, I think that I need to change that bad habit immediately. Although sleeping is good because it recharges your body, it is not at all healthy to over-sleep or to lack sleep, for that matter. This is an unfortunate news for all the adult men and adult women out there, who love to take a lot of extra slumber time.
Many doctors are now suggesting that over-sleeping and lack of sleep would add up to a higher risk of type 2 diabetes in adults. Men and women, from the age of 40 and above, may be prone to diabetes because of their sleeping habits. You see, diabetes is not just caused by your daily meal intake. Diabetes is a disease which results from many other factors in our lifestyle. The most ideal hours for sleeping is six up to eight hours. Those who sleep from five to six hours are most likely to develop diabetes.
Many people who are experiencing sleep apnea problems are troubled by this fact. Not only are they having difficulty in sleeping, they are also highly susceptible to diabetes. The best way to prevent diabetes is to have a regular healthy diet, and of course, the right amount of sleep every night.

I have heard of the newest development in insulin treatment through the form of an inhaler. The inhaler is just like a normal asthma attack inhaler. This insulin inhaler would surely make it easier for diabetic people to take their daily dose of insulin shots. Normally, diabetics use the syringe for their insulin shots, but, now they can simply use the inhaler.
The FDA or the Food and Drug Administration ha approved this insulin inhaler. The insulin is in the form of powder that is inhaled through the inhaler. This first-ever inhaler drug is called the Exubera. This inhaler drug can treat adult patients who have the type 1 and the type 2 diabetes diseases. The Exubera inhaler is said to be very safe and very effective. Before it was approved by the FDA, the Exubera inhaler was tested amongst 2,500 diabetics. It has also been tested on diabetics who have the type 1 and the type 2 disease. So, you won't have to worry about buying a different drug if you have either of the two types of diabetes.
The Exubera inhaler is for general diabetic use. But, if you're a diabetic and you smoke, you cannot use the Exubera. It will not go well with a smoker diabetic's system. This drug inhaler is also not highly recommendable for diabetics who have asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema. So, all the diabetic adult men and diabetic adult women should not have to worry about taking too much time on injecting themselves with insulin. The Exubera would provide the daily shots for them.

My grandmother, who has diabetes, regularly injects insulin in her bloodstream. I often supervise her through the insulin-injecting process. But, sometimes I can't help but wonder what would happen if I weren't there. What if nobody else can supervise her? I know for a fact that there are certain dangers to wrong injection processes. Some people with elderly diabetics in their families cannot afford a private nurse or a stay-in nanny.
To avoid such problems due to manual insulin intake, doctors and researchers have been working hard to produce and develop an insulin-providing implantable pump. This implantable pump would be in the form of a capsule. The capsule would continuously provide insulin to the body's bloodstream. It has cells which distribute the insulin throughout the body. The cells would "borrow nutrients" from the body for continuous insulin production. This capsule is yet to be tested, so, we better watch out for that one.
There are also insulin inhalers which are to be taken on a daily basis. Just like preventing asthma attacks, the insulin inhalers are fast-insulin relievers. The insulin goes through the mouth, tongue, and throat, then into the bloodstream. I think that these inventions are one of the best that I have heard of. They are not only practical and manageable, they are also very user-friendly. If these insulin alternatives do come out, I'd be the first one to buy them for my grandmother.

Contrary to popular belief, diabetes is not only a disease that tends to attack adults leading unhealthy personal lifestyles. Even people who do not smoke, drink, or eat too much can have diabetes. Yes, that includes children. In fact, children are usual victims of a kind of diabetes, Type 1, and having this illness at such a tender age could affect their activities at home and at school.
Recently, researchers have found that there might be a link between diabetes and the children's attentive span, especially during learning sessions in school. What the researchers have discovered is actually good news, since it involves the improvement of the children's attentiveness through diabetes monitoring. How?
Well, their experiments showed that kids with stabilized levels of blood sugar, acquired through regular fitting of insulin pumps, developed attentiveness and better learning in the classroom compared to their 'normal' behavior the before the insulin fits. These results definitely revealed some areas where the constant check-up after the kids' health certainly helps in boosting the academic performance of diabetic children. At the same time, it helps in saving some time and effort on the part of the teacher and their peers in their assistance and management duties.

At present, there are more than 500 million Americans who are taking insulin injections. There is good news for insulin dependent patients. Insulin has been used in treating diabetic patients since 1920's. There is no need to feel the pain of insulin injections! Last January 26, 2006, the Food and Drug Administration approved the first ever inhaled insulin product for the treatment of diabetes. This drug is called Exubera.
Exubera is an inhaled powder form of recombinant human insulin rDNA. It lowers blood sugar concentration by allowing the blood sugar to be taken up by the cells as a source of fuel. Exubera is to be inhaled to the lungs through the mouth using a specially designed inhaler. This drug is used for the treatment of adult patients suffering from Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The effectiveness and the safety of inhaling this drug have been established through studying 2500 patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Usage of this drug varies depending on your diabetes type. For example, if you are suffering from type 1 diabetes, inhaling exubera can be added to longer acting insulin as a replacement for insulin taken with meals. However, in type 2 diabetes, Exubera can be taken alone.
Exubera prescriptions will be accompanied by a medication guide containing FDA-approved information. Exubera is not advisable for persons who are smoking or just quit smoking for a period of 6 months. It is also not recommended for patients with asthma, bronchitis, or emphysema.

Diabetes is prevalent in almost all parts of the United States. Sadly, the percentage of Americans who are developing diabetes is rapidly increasing, most especially in parts where most Americans are suffering from obesity. Obesity and diabetes can never part.
In Tennessee, there are so many obese Americans. Thus, there are a large percentage of people with diabetes. Along with obesity and diabetes, these people are also prone with other deadly diseases, like the cancer disease and heart attack. There are so many ways to fight diabetes and obesity. But, some people in Tennessee can't seem to grasp the concept of healthy living.
Today, a study has been made on the people of Tennessee. The ratio of people with diabetes has grown into a whopping one is to twelve. A decade ago, the ratio was just one is to twenty. The health experts have announced that Tennessee has the third highest rate of diabetes in the whole of America. Tennessee also has the fifth highest rate of obesity in the country. The diabetes specifically rising in Tennessee is the type 2 diabetes. The type 2 diabetes is basically treated through a strict healthy diet, an everyday exercise workout, and medication. The local Tennessee government is still pursuing its action to fight diabetes and obesity in Tennessee. Diabetes and obesity have been causing the Tennessee local government to spend extra state fund just to support the people who have developed the diseases.

I always wondered if eating slower would indeed lessen our chances of getting fatter. Our mothers would always tell us at the dinner table to chew our food slowly and to eat slowly so we can properly digest our food. I developed eating slowly as an eating habit because my mother would always tell me to do so. But, do you know that this simple habit can delay the development of diabetes in our bodies?
In Saudi Arabia, a doctor has found out that eating slowly can really delay the development of diabetes. Many of the people from Dubai, Saudi Arabia have been developing diabetes. A recent study concluded that the large meals being served in Saudi greatly affects the increase of diabetes in Saudi.
People in Saudi have not been having too much regular exercise regimens and they are not eating healthy. In fact, those who eat too much large meals and those who chew faster in Saudi have doubled their blood sugar level in a short span of time. So, if I were you and you chew your food fast, you better slow down before it's too late.

As we all know, Diabetes is one of the leading diseases in the United States today. But, there are many ways to prevent it, if we just eat the right and healthy food diet. Of course, we also need to have a regular exercise regimen to make our lifestyles healthier. So, if we already have Diabetes, what are the situations that we should anticipate?
Diabetes can very well be mistaken as drunk driving. Now, why is that? Well, studies show that traffic officers usually mistake diabetics for drunk drivers. This is because diabetics who are in the disease's early stage usually get blurred visions, weakness, confusion attacks, losing their body coordination, "slurry" speech, and numb lips. Now, these symptoms pretty much seem to be that of a drunken diver, don't they? Also, diabetics who usually have insulin reactions have acetone in their breath. Acetone in the breath is most often than not, mistaken to be alcohol in the breath. Thus, diabetics usually result to, well, drunk drivers. So, my advice for all the law enforcers, know that not all accused drunk drivers are in fact, drunk.

New research has linked diabetes to increase risk of pancreatic cancer. According to the US National Cancer Institute, high levels of insulin with low body response puts a person at a higher cancer risk.
Type 1 diabetics, who have low levels of insulin in their body, are outside the scope of the study. But type 2 diabetics often need to produce more insulin and this may lead to cancer cell growth. The study points to the early stages of type 2 diabetes wherein the pancreas increases insulin production to compensate for the lack of absorption.
But researchers allow that the risk is too low for type 2 diabetics to be alarmed. More research is also needed as the subjects that were monitored in the research were also habitual smokers.
