He's a diabetic dude or he's nothing. I'm talking about my junior high classmate, Nick, who's as sickly as any tiny fellow can get. Diabetes runs in his family, but the symptoms never show up until in the early twenties, as in the case of his pretty twin sisters. He, on the other hand, had been pissing in his pants 24/7 ever since he was in third grade. When the student club members carried lunch boxes with Oreo and spaghetti, he won't join the potluck. Sometimes, he was branded the low-carb Johnny.

 Don't ever believe anyone who says diabetes is contagious. It was a childhood myth we all loved to nurse in our stupid noggins. Nick didn't spread the disease, but classmates had spread the scuttlebutt that this lone fella was sick and therefore, we should all keep a wide berth. In reality, diabetes is truly safe - at least, to us who ate Oreos and spaghetti and didn't have diabetics in our families, nor lived with diabetic patients.

It was only later in high school that we learned about Type 1 diabetes. This type of "D" can still be cured, according to Nick's physician, as long as the glucose level in the body is maintained. Back then, the Biology teacher used to call Nick out in the front to lecture about the importance of insulin in the body. We would yawn, of course, but it would be another ten minutes before Nick shocked the whole class. He had later developed Type 2 diabetes, and now we see him in sunbathing in his lawn, strapped in his wheelchair.

A life with diabetes is not a walk in the park. Having the disease for the rest of your life is tough enough. I have this old friend who is suffering from this disease. He discovered it just last year and he was very shocked when he found out because there was no diabetes or even cancer history in her family. He was so depressed when he found out about his illness. I was one of the first people he called after getting the diagnosis. I told him to face it because that's the only thing that he can do now. There are a lot of people who are suffering also from this disease who are surviving and happy with their lives. It's just a matter of having a good lifestyle, something that is suited to his condition.
On that day, we both searched the internet about diabetes. We found out a lot of information that can help him. Right after that, I told him that he does not have to worry because I know he can can still live a normal life, even with diabetes. He just have to be disciplined and open-minded. Early in the morning, I was awaken with his call. That was five in the morning, and he's inviting me join him for a run. Oh man!I told him it's too early. The following day, he enrolled in a gym class to have a regular work-out. He also checked the schedule of his doctor to have a meeting for a regular check-up. He also bought some books about diabetes. The following day, I was joking him to taste my wife's latest recipe which a chocolate meringue cookies. Then he said, "I still want to live." and we just laughed our heart out.

I have a cousin who has hypoglycemia. One time, we were at the mall and he suddenly collapsed. I was horrified and didn't know what to do. We took him to the doctor and that's when we knew that he has hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia is defined as simply having low blood sugar. This is when your body sugar is very low and you can no longer produce energy for your activities. Hypoglycemia may seem very insignificant to having diabetes, but, it's not.
Hypoglycemia is also a side effect for diabetics who are under medication. Diabetics are required a strict healthy diet everyday. They are also prescribed a lot of medication. Several of the medications taken by diabetics control the body's blood sugar. Thus, this sometimes leads to hypoglycemia when the body lacks too much sugar.
The solution for hypoglycemia is to eat healthy foods that are rich in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the main source of glucose. Hypoglycemia is not at all serious. You just have to know the precautionary measures to be undertaken when dealing with it. Sometimes, if hypoglycemia is left untreated, it can very well lead to loss of consciousness. As we all know, smoking is very bad for our health. I have an aunt who smokes a lot and she has diabetes. Her doctor told her that smoking would greatly increase her risk of very high cholesterol. Smoking would also increase the possibility of death due to heart disease than those of the diabetics who do not smoke. Diabetics who smoke are also more likely to have kidney failure, nerve damage, blood vessel damage, and other fatal diseases.
It's really very hard to quit the chain smoking habit. But, if you already have diabetes, you better find ways to ditch the bad habit, and soon. Your doctors or health care providers have ways on how you can avoid smoking. The highly suggested solution is to use the nicotine patch.
There are also medications which can help you quit smoking.  Sure, we automatically comfort the people we care about when they are diagnosed with diabetes. But, how else can we help them and motivate them regarding their situation? Of course, we are also grateful that we have not yet developed the disease. But, for the people we love, we have to extend our concern by being a good partner in fighting diabetes. We should cook the right healthy food. We have to motivate them on their regular exercise routines and of course, we have to always think positive.
To be a good partner, we should also be aware that we are not at all excused from developing diabetes. When our loved ones are taking their blood glucose level, we should also take ours. So, that we are aware of our own health and sugar level. Also, an important thing is that, we have to start a daily exercise planner with our diabetic loved ones. That way, they are motivated to live a healthy lifestyle. We should also make our regular visits to the doctor along with our diabetic loved ones. This would assure them that they are not alone in their fight against diabetes. We should also know how to cook the meals by ourselves and eat the right food. In doing so, you can prevent developing diabetes and your loved ones would not feel the isolation when eating healthy foods during meals. Of course, we should always understand the ups and downs of being a diabetic so that we would know how to be the best caregiver for them.

Lifestyle of a person also affects his general well-being. A person who is already suffering from a disease such as diabetes should modify his lifestyle.  I don't wish to dampen any hopes for diabetics who wish to exercise by giving a list of do's and don'ts, but I think I'm going to do just that--in the spirit of precaution. I’ve had diabetic friends tell me that they did suffer the consequences by not taking heed. The only risk associated with exercising so far is hypoglycemia, or the lowering of the blood sugar level, which happens right after exercise.
If this happens doctors usually recommend for you to take in glucose tablets or any sweet drink to balance off hypoglycemia. A blistering on the feet will be apparent for those who have circulatory problems so be wary on their appearance. Don't forget to warm up first before doing any kind of exercise. Lastly, since you're going to perspire you will lose a lot of body fluids that can result in dehydration, so drinking water is a must.

Diabetic Neuropathy is a terrible complication of Diabetes that affects the extremities, particularly the feet and legs. There are two types of this complication. The first and more common type is the nonpainful Diabetic neuropathy, which causes the feeling of the foot to be as if it were numb.
